That's two in a row: Hoyas again dominate an overmatched opponent
After Georgetown beat Wagner, we wrote that we'd like to see the Hoyas build some consistency in really dominating bad opponents and the Hoyas absolutely did that on Saturday against the Albany Great Danes. Once again, Albany is not very good (came in ranked 230th in KenPom), but the Hoyas did everything they should have in the win.
The first half started a little slowly for the Hoyas and they were especially bitten by bad fouls as the game was within a couple of possessions (37-32) at the under 4 timeout. The Hoyas finished the half on a 12-3 run to make it 49-35 at half and never looked back. Throughout the first half, when the Hoyas had good defensive intensity without fouling, Albany had no answer and it led to better flow on offense for the Hoyas as well. When the Hoyas are able to control the tempo, they really look strong and comfortable.
The Hoyas built on the rout in the second half, playing really tight and high intensity defense. The Hoyas forced 18 Albany turnovers, leading to 28 points and held Albany to just 35% shooting (31% from three). They really toyed with Albany for most of the game. As Uncle Dad put it after the game:
These other teams might STINK. But it’s been awhile since Georgetown just destroyed an inferior opponent. And they’ve done it twice this week! And it wasn’t like the other teams have just Benny Hill-ed their way out of these games. I think Georgetown actually deserves credit for playing well at both ends.
It was a really enjoyable game.
A few notes to close out:
- Micah Peavy again led the Hoyas offensive attack with 24 points. He also added 8 assists (!) and 4 rebounds. He was in complete control on both ends of the floor. We need to see him repeat it against better opposition, but it was an outstanding game.
- Caleb Williams played his best game so far. He had 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. He made a couple of nifty passes, played really good defense, and always seemed to be in the right spots. Great build game for the freshman.
- Thomas Sorber continues to impress on both ends of the floor. 14 points and 13 rebounds in this one, a few really good post possessions, some good looks from deep, and really good defense once again. Again, he'll need to carry this forward to better opposition, but his presence changes the outlook for this team drastically.
- At one point, the Hoyas had 9 assists on 11 made baskets. They finished with 26 assists on 41 made FGs. This...is a departure from the norm and something we'd like to see moving forward.
- The Hoyas jumped to 86th in KenPom after this game, almost all the way back to their preseason rank of 82. The last week has been a marked improvement for this team in an extremely measurable way.
One more cupcake before a big one in Morgantown against West Virginia on Friday.
